What's happening?

I need to add a category for the whole family.

Well, Deb is now halfway through the pregnancy of our second child. Duncan is a happy, healthy, energetic 1 year old. I am surviving.

I won some awards at a beer competition in Illinois in June and that has really driven me to do better. To that end, I've installed some software to help highlight my brewing. Take a look at what I brewed over the weekend. Hopefully, I can put together some funds to get a bigger kettle so I can share some batches.

Duncan's having none of this, so I'd better just stop. I'm hoping to get more on here soon.

On Turning One

Surely he was confused when we sat him in his high chair with 50 people looking at him and saying how cute he was. Surely he wondered why so many would pay homage and drop wrapped presents at his very feet. Surely he figured something was up when he had a cake the size of his head placed before him (with fire, no less) and then was sung to. Surely he knew the jig was up when that cake was left there and then force fed him at first my his Momma. Surely he considered getting cake up his nose and in his hair, even if he kept it all around his mouth. Surely he appreciated all of the presents he saw wizzing by as Momma dispatched them. Surely he was wiped out by all of the walking, crawling, talking, singing, and playing.

Sure enough, he had a good day. Let's do it again in a year.

Thanks to everyone who help us get to this day. Seems like a decade since this side-trip began. Whether you were with us in person yesterday or in spirit, thank you from the depths of our hearts. Thank you.

In the News

Deborah reminded me to add this. I was mentioned in an article about homebrewing in one of the Fort Wayne papers. Not everything in the article is as I said it or intended but it's not a bad article. Here it is.

And then, a few weeks later, I sent a message to Charlie Papazian and it ended up in his Beer Examiner blog-ish thing. Hit more below to see how this went...

2009

We're still around. I just posted photos. I'll link to some of them soon (I hope).

We spent last weekend in Columbus. We went to the zoo on Saturday when the air was 10°. The zoo was mostly empty and we had some great experiences with Duncan. We also got to see a neat exhibit at the Ohio Historical Society Museum that made model scenes of popular scenes and people in Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers.

Soon I should be posting the last couple months of studio portraits.

I almost forgot to add that my computer has a problem so I've been mostly offline for the last few weeks. I'm working on getting a new laptop working until I can repair my desktop system. Gotta love sub-$400 laptops!

What's going on?

We're running into our annual problem with domain registrations. Hopefully we get it completely taken care of this time around. Until then, or maybe forever, Rah-Ben.com is now Rah-Ben.NET.

Last weekend I came in fourth in a pipe smoking contest, winning myself a new pipe that is pretty cool. I also bought a block of briar to be cut, drilled and fitted with a stem so that in a week or so, I can begin carving a pipe for myself. It will take some time and some work, but I'll finally be able to see if I have what it takes to make my own pipes and maybe take it on as a part time money making activity. The only way to find out is to start trying.

Duncan is doing great. He's pretty much got the crawling thing down and is already trying to raise himself to a stand from the middle of the floor. That will be a while, but he's not getting frustrated, so that's just fine with us.

And to wrap things up, I should note that I've found a way that I might be able to get started on the journey toward starting a CSA program. Details are developing. I'll share as soon as we know more.
